Population III star formation in an X-ray background – II. Protostellar discs, multiplicity, and mass function of the stars

چکیده
ABSTRACT Disc fragmentation plays an important role in determining the number of primordial stars (Pop III stars), their masses, and hence initial mass function. In this second paper a series, we explore effect uniform far-ultraviolet H2-photodissociating X-ray radiation backgrounds on formation Pop using grid high-resolution zoom-in simulations. We find that, background, protostellar discs have lower surface density higher Toomre Q parameter, so they are more stable. For reason, irradiated undergo fewer fragmentations typically produce either binary systems or low-multiplicity systems. contrast, cases with weak no irradiation typical multiplicity 6 ± 3. addition, most massive protostar each system is smaller by roughly factor 2 when disc X-rays, due to accretion rate. With these two effects combined, function fragments becomes top-heavy strong background well described power law slope 1.53 high-mass cutoff 61 M⊙. Without 0.49 229 Finally, protostars migrate outward after likely high-angular momentum gas from outside migration frequent significant absence irradiation.

Formation Criteria and the Mass of Secondary Population Iii Stars
We explore the formation of secondary Population III (Pop III) stars under radiation hydrodynamic (RHD) feedback by a preformed massive star. To properly treat RHD feedback, we perform threedimensional RHD simulations incorporating the radiative transfer of ionizing photons as well as H2 dissociating photons from a preformed star. A collapsing gas cloud is settled at a given distance from a 120...
متن کاملPopulation III star formation in a ΛCDM universe, II: Effects of a photodissociating background
We examine aspects of primordial star formation in the presence of a molecular hydrogen-dissociating ultraviolet background. We compare a set of AMR hydrodynamic cosmological simulations using a single cosmological realization but with a range of ultraviolet background strengths in the Lyman-Werner band. This allows us to study the effects of Lyman-Werner radiation on suppressing H2 cooling at ...
متن کاملOn the Initial Mass Function of Population Iii Stars
The collapse and fragmentation of filamentary primordial gas clouds are explored using onedimensional and two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations coupled with the nonequilibrium processes of hydrogen molecule formation. The cloud evolution is computed from the initial central density nc = 10− 10 cm. The simulations show that depending upon the initial density, there are two occasions for the...
متن کاملPopulation III star formation in a ΛCDM universe, I: The effect of formation redshift and environment on protostellar accretion rate
We perform 12 extremely high resolution adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) cosmological hydrodynamic simulations of Population III star formation in a ΛCDM universe, varying the box size and large-scale structure, to understand systematic effects in the formation of primordial protostellar cores. We find results that are qualitatively similar to those of Abel, Bryan, & Norman (2002), Bromm, Coppi, ...
